Habitat and Distribution

Altai

Sailugem range. © Svetlana GoryunovaIn Altai Pallas' cat lives mainly in the alpine steppe and keeps along courses of temporary rivers near stone outcrops, dismantling mountains and rock formations (so-called curumnics) at altitudes up to 3000 meters.

Pallas' cat habitat covers far south-east of the region. Pallas' cat inhabits northern spurs of the Sailugemski ridge (near the Kokure and the Tarkhata rivers, upper courses of the Chuya and the Chaghan-Burgazi) and the plato Ukok (near the Jazator and the Argut, lower courses of the Chaghan-Uzun and Bel'tir surroundings), but is sometimes encountered in the southern fringes of the Kurai ridge, near Tashanta settlement, in the Istiut surroundings, in the upper courses of the Irbistu and the Elangash, and in the Talduair.

There are literary texts implying Pallas' cat existed in the south-western subregion of Altai (western Altai mountain country up to the Listviaga, the Holzun and the Tigirek ranges), but they are yet to be proved true.
