Pallas’s cat was shooted by the photo camera on the Chikhachev’s Ridge (Altai Republic, Russia) on October 8, 2011. It occured on the mountain edge at the height of 3400 m above see level in the upper Kara-Oyuk valley.

A young manul came to a village looking for food, and got bitten by dogs. After a vicious fight the cat, its paw broken, crawled into one of the homesteads. The mistress woke up in the middle of the night because the dogs started barking. She found the cat next to the fence, barely breathing. Thanks to her kindness, patience, sense of duty and healing skills, the dying cat survived. Every day she spent hours taking care of the animal: gave the cat medications, tended and bandaged its wounds. After a while the cat got better: the appetite returned, the fur thickened, the animal started moving… and biting.

This is the puzzle that the employees of Nature Reserve 'Daursky' will have to solve by the end of this winter. The first phase of building an estimate of the status of manul's population in Zabaikalsky steppes has come to an end this December. The research is supported by the United Nations Development Program and is part of a wider project conducted in the region due to the preparation of the next issue of the Red List. We need to confirm the existence of the serious threats, if there are any, towards the survival of manuls, and to organize the ways to monitor the species, which will allow checking on the well-being of the Pallas Cat in future.

This July the new project was started in the frames of UNDP/GEF project "Improving the Coverage and Management Efficiency of Protected Areas in the Steppe Biome of Russia". This project aims to estimate the number of manuls in Zabaikalsky Krai and the main factors that affect their population. The natural reserve "Daursky" is responsible for the project.

The winter countings of Pallas' Cat were carried out in the Kosh-Agach district of the Altai Republic. The main study site is the south slopes of the Kurai Ridge (in the Chuya and Kurai intermountain depressions). The local people were interviewed also about Pallas' Cat.

It's the second field season that manuls of nature reserve "Daursky" are being observed. Last year, the reserve's zoologist Vadim Kiriliuk suggested to watch a one-year-old female manul that should have been giving birth shortly. There were several other females with radio collars, but this one was chosen due to the convenience of her location - she made her den right under the abandoned camp building.

The new reserve named "The Sailughem" will be situated in Kosh-Agachski district of Republic. It will consist of two parts and include places of high conservation value for many endangered species.

Radiotelemetry research on Pallas cat's ecology begins in Daursky State Nature Reserve, Chita region, Russia. Pallas cat's tracks were found straight away after setting the blanket of snow on the hills of the north side of the Zun-Torey lake. The female was catched there soon.

There were the representatives from the administration, scientific society and the press, the students of GASU. Dr. Genrikh G. Sobansky, the famous scientist and eminent biologist, summarized data on big mammals of Altai Mountains.
