Khakasia: to return marmots and Pallas' cats February 22, 2006

Pallas' cats and marmots has been disapeared from most parts of Khakasia Republic in the past century due to human activity. Nowadays Pallas cat can occasionally be met near the Tyva boundary. Tyva is one of his main habitats in Russia.

The State Committee of Ecology of Khakasia Republic is preparing the unique programme on re-acclimatization of marmots and Pallas' cats to Khakasian steppes.

The amount of about 200000USD will be given for this work. It will be conducted by the Republic Zoo (Abakan city) and will last for 4 years. Pallas cats and marmots will be released in the Shira and Ust-Abakan districts of Khakasia.
