Zabaikalye: it will be more places for Pallas cats in Daursky Nature Reserve March 5, 2005

The territory of Daursky Nature Reserve will be enlarged.

Earlier this Nature Reserve, which is situated in Chita Region (south-eastern Siberia), was 2/3 of wetlands including Torey Lakes. The steppes nearby were almost not protected. Last years the number of Mongolian Gazelles, Siberian Marmots and Pallas Cats has been increased. These animals are listed in the national and regional Red Books. Nowadays the territory the reserve has is not enough to conserve steppe ecosystems and species, indigenous inhabitants of Daurian steppes. The territory which is suggested to be protected is inhabited with about 10 Siberian Marmots families, a pair os Steppe Eagles, 1-2 pairs of Sakers, 10-15 Pallas Cats. Just here there has place an active settling of Mongolian Gazelle which came back to Russian only some years ago.
