To the Pallas Cat habitats in the Altai Mountains (about our expedition)

The most west part of Pallas Cat area in Russia is situated in the south-eastern Altai within the Chuya Steppe and its mountain environs and partly the Ukok Plateau. Nobody specially surveyed Pallas Cat in Altai Republic (see about Pallas Cat in Altai Republic). The main object of our project was to investigate the key Pallas Cat habitats in Altai Mts.

The meteo station in the Ulandryk. © Anna BarashkovaThe expedition base camp was organized in the former meteo station in the Ulandryk river. The Ulandryk valley is one of main Pallas Cat habitats in Altai Republic. We put in the Ulandryk and in the front of the Chuya Steppe 10 routes, and also 2 routes in the mountain massif of the Keregetas and 1 route between the Yustyd and the Bar-Burgazy rivers. The full route extension was about 200 km. We surveyed the other mammals (fox, corsac fox, wolf, tolai hare, mustelids, pikas' colonies) and birds (including their nests) at the same time. Local people (herdsmen, hunters, etc.) were interviewed also.

Data of surveys and interviews obtained are analyzing and preparing to publication at present.

Prior results of the survey were presented at the International Meeting "The Teriofauna of Russia and Contiguous Territories" (January 31 - February 2, 2007, A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution, Moscow). See the paper Pallas Cat (Otocolobus manul) status in the south-eastern Altai Republic ›› (only in Russian now)
